Y., Aug. 10 -- Hudson Valley Community College issued the following news release:
The College in the High School (CIHS) program at Hudson Valley Community College recently became accredited by the National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships (NACEP), a professional organization and accrediting body that advances concurrent enrollment programs in institutions of higher education and high schools. Hudson Valley's CIHS program offers local high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to take college courses for credit in their high schools at a reduced tuition rate.
NACEP accreditation standards ensure that CIHS courses are of the same high quality and rigor as on-campus courses offered by the institution, that students are held to the same standards of achievement as students taking on-campus courses, and that instructors meet the academic requirements for faculty and instructors at the host institution. The accreditation benefits students who seek credit recognition for courses completed when applying to college and it enhances the ability of individual concurrent enrollment programs to recruit new students and partners.
One of only 66 two- and four-year institutions, both public and private, in the nation to be accredited by NACEP, Hudson Valley joins the ranks of Indiana University-Purdue University (Fort Wayne) and Syracuse University among other top colleges.
In order to achieve accreditation, the CIHS office conducted a two-year self-study and application process that documented how Hudson Valley's program implements NACEP's 15 national standards for program quality in the areas of curriculum, faculty, students, assessment and program evaluation.
'We are pleased to receive this recognition of excellence which reflects the quality educational partnerships the college has forged with school districts and teachers throughout the Capital District and the close collaboration we have had with academic departments here on campus since 1995,' said Suzanne Brownrigg, Director of High School Programs and the Educational Outreach Program at Hudson Valley.
NACEP President Lynn Burbank remarked, 'Through NACEP's rigorous accreditation peer-review process, Hudson Valley Community College demonstrated that it integrates high quality standards-based practices across its concurrent enrollment program. We welcome Hudson Valley's College in the High School as one of the 66 concurrent enrollment programs nationwide that have earned NACEP accreditation.'
Hudson Valley's CIHS program, established in 1995, is open to qualified high school juniors and seniors in a total of 30 high schools and BOCES (Board of Cooperative Educational Services) sites throughout the Capital Region. Students pay a reduced tuition rate of $50 per credit hour, while those who are income eligible receive scholarships for the full cost of tuition. Courses are offered in business, liberal arts and sciences, theater arts, technology and computer science.
Founded in 1953, Hudson Valley Community College offers more than 70 associate degree and certificate programs in four schools: Business; Engineering and Industrial Technologies; Health Sciences; and Liberal Arts and Sciences; and workforce and academic preparation programs offered through the Educational Opportunity Center. One of 30 community colleges in the State University of New York system, it has an enrollment of more than 14,000 students, and is known as a leader in distance learning initiatives and worker retraining. Hudson Valley has more than 65,000 alumni.
